Manifesto for Southwell 1999

"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity."

Manifesto for Southwell

Transport

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Seek to get a reduction of traffic levels with a new management scheme, based on NCC proposals

Keep ‘free’ parking for a maximum of two hours on and off street

Support initiatives to reduce parking on pavements in town

Support public transport initiatives including better transport to and from Fiskerton Station

Introduce cycle racks in the town centre

Campaign for a pedestrian crossing on Westgate

Development

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Fight to keep the urban edge as defined in the new Local Area Plan

Support development inside the ‘edge’ which meets housing need eg high density housing

Argue that we have limited employment and poor infrastructure to support further development

Support building design in keeping with the local area Town Centre

Town Centre

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Maintain the vitality of the town centre

Establish a Town Centre Forum

Seek support for town centre improvement

Recreation

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Seek to develop the Space Net area with further equipment for the early teens

Support local initiatives for young people

Devolve a limited sum of money annually to a representative ‘Youth Council’

Waste Management

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Campaign to introduce a plastic recycling bank

Campaign for a curbside recycling collection and waste reduction initiatives

Local Democracy

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors for Southwell will:

Maintain a high profile Council office in the centre of the town

Open up decision making as widely as possible

Establish a representative ‘Youth Council’

Not turn the Town Council into a ‘grant making’ body

We recognise that there will be other initiatives that will occur – but that our objectives outlined above will be our main proirities for development between 1999 and 2003, as finances are available.
