Will the Police Move out of Southwell?
For some time the Police have been seeking new premises in the area. Although the current Police Station is a suitable building for the Police to operate from, the Police Authority is looking to sell the building and rent offices and operation rooms.
The present Police Station is jointly owned by the Police Authority and Nottinghamshire County Council. The County Council do not use their part of the building, since the Magistrates' Courts were closed and the court moved to Newark.
FOCUS believes that a number of other buildings have been looked at for a new Police Station, both in and outside the town. There are few buildings in Southwell which would provide the facilities that the Police demand. The Police operating out of the Southwell Police Station work across the large rural area from Thurgarton to Sutton-on-Trent, Bilsthorpe to the River Trent
Brendan Haigh, Liberal Democrat councillor for Southwell, and previously the Chairman of the Police Authority, said, "it is crucial that the Police have a base in the town. The present Police Station is in a good position, with easy access to the main trouble spots, and to all the villages which are served from the Station."
"The Liberal Democrats are determined to campaign to ensure that the Police have a good operating base in the town," said Brendan Haigh. "The Police Station means a 24 hour 365 day presence in the town - losing this would be a disaster for the area."
FOCUS will report.
