Keeping the Post Office Open? Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Eileen Rodgers attracted all party support at the District Council for support for local Post Offices. The Government are now insisting that all benefits from 2002 are to be paid into bank accounts. This means that benefits, such as pensions, and Child benefit will only be paid electronically. Speaking a FOCUS one Sub Post Master said "many people come into the Post Office for their benefit - paying benefits gives us 40% of our income. Not only that, but they often buy other items too when they are here." Ending payment via the cash book system will have a dramatic effect on the viability of many village Post Offices Eileen pointed out at the Council meeting. Her motion expressing concern to the Government was supported by Labour and Conservative councillors - being passed unanimously.
Yet again, the Liberal Democrats at the District Council have shown their leadership in issues that matter to the local community. |
