Dorset Coastal Guided Walks
2008 ‘Rock Around the Coast’
Dorset Marine Week
and Seafest

For the forth year running, from 26th May to 2nd June, Dorset Coastlink will lead a series of guided walks for the public along a stretch of the Jurassic Coast. Starting at Charmouth and finishing at Studland, we will be joined by a host of expert speakers and visit a variety of fascinating sites along the way to bring to life the wildlife, history, geology and archaeology of this amazing world renowned coastline. This breath-taking walk raises awareness of the issues, past and present, that have affected our coast and its future threats, as well as raising crucial funds for Coastlink projects.

Dorset Marine Week 2008 was held from 2nd to 10th August and featured Seafest on Sunday 3rd August at Kimmeridge in the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve. The theme this year was ‘Seas of Plenty’ and focused on the changes that our seas have undergone in the last 100 years resulting in the loss of much of our large marine wildlife. It also highlighted the need for Marine Protected Areas in order to try and rebuild the extraordinary richness of our marine environment.

At Seafest over 500 people enjoyed a day of varied activities including rockpool rambles, beach-litter art, tractor-trailer rides around Kimmeridge Bay, eco-friendly crabbing and marine-themed quizzes. During the course of Marine Week 43 events were organised by the various Coastlink centres, with over 1,600 people attending.

Marine Week 2009 will run from 8th to 16th August in Dorset with a detailed programme of events available from early July.
