I am Paul Sutherland. I work as a journalist but my main interest is amateur astronomy. I live in Putney in South West London.

Main interest

City lights mean I do most of my observing when I manage to escape into the countryside or to the village of Puimichel in the South of France. The village is home to a new art centre.

Special interest

Within astronomy, I am particularly interested in comets and meteors - the shooting stars which are the dust particles left by comets in their wake.

The arrival of the splendid Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 gave me the chance to take photos of it, some of which have appeared in various magazines and books.

The big recent astronomical event was the Total Eclipse of the Sun on August 11, 1999. I went to Alderney in the Channel Islands. See my report and others here

I have also been lucky enough to witness magnificent displays of the Leonid meteors in 1998 and 1999.

Keeping busy

I spend much of my spare time working with the Society for Popular Astronomy, Britain's main national society for beginners or those interested in space at a popular level. I spent 15-years as editor of the society's News Circulars and eight years as editor of their journal. Now I've been roped in again as their Webmaster.

Family links

My father, Brian Sutherland, was a talented potter, whose book Glazes From Natural Sources, was a classic in its field. Sadly he died on October 16, 1998, of a brain tumour. He was a kind and clever man and we greatly miss him. But he lives on through his very fine ceramics such as that pictured here. View a gallery of his work may be seen here. My mother, Beryl Sutherland, has a vast collection of teapots - 1700 at the last count. No they are not all by my father! She often speaks to local clubs - but funnily enough she prefers to drink coffee. I'm trying to get her to put up a teapot site.
