Scriveners Company is comparatively small, with a total membership of
approximately 200. Its principal activities are:
Professional: regulating the standards and qualifications
of the scrivener notaries, whose training makes them proficient not only in
notarial practice but also in foreign laws and languages. They are in a true sense both linguists and
international lawyers, and to the extent that the Company is a “working
livery” they represent the working element.
Civic: maintaining the right and duty of liverymen
to attend at Guildhall in Common Hall to vote in the elections of the Sheriffs
and the Lord Mayor; also complying with the provisions of the Company’s
Charter in relation to the regulation of the Company and its officers.
Charitable: the Company maintains a Charity Fund, from which
annual grants are made. The principal
items are bursaries to the City of London School, the City of London School for
Girls and the
Other
donations made are to the chosen charities of the Master and the Lord Mayor: to
fund a prize for calligraphy at Reigate School of Art and to provide support
for other calligraphic bodies;
Donations
are also made to institutions associated with the Company’s traditional
links with heraldry and the

Social: there are traditionally two dinners in
October and April also a variety of lunches, receptions and other special
occasions, notably the annual presentation to the Lord Mayor of the
Scriveners’ quill pen with which he signs himself into office. A list
