History

A Short History of Sutton Coldfield Spiritualists Church
By Mr. B.P. Potter
President February 1965 to September 1976 and February 1979 to 1985.

The church was founded in 1931 at the home of Mr and Mrs Pearson,
5 Weston Road, Wylde Green, where the following sixteen people met and held services.

Mr & Mrs Payn, Mr & Mrs Whitacre, Mr & Mrs Neal, Mrs Harison, Mrs Bloxham, Mr Ellis, Mrs Laughton, Mrs Friday, Mrs Brant, Mrs Prosser, Mrs Wilson, Miss Hammond, Mr Adderley. Mr Payn was elected President.

Membership quickly grew and it became necessary to find more suitable premises, and until July 1963 when the Church in Kenelm road was dedicated, regular weekly services were held in turn at 92 The Parade, The Co-op Hall, The YMCA Midland drive, and finally The Arts Theatre, South Parade.

The Land on which the Church is built was given by Mr J.J. Slater, a local businessman and we are eternally grateful to him, for we realise that but for his generous gift, Sutton Coldfield may not have had such a beautiful Church.

The original Church cost £4,150 and accommodated 100 people. In 1966 it was decided to extend the building incorporating a basement, and Healing Rooms, so an "Extension Fund" was launched.

Plans were drawn up in 1969, and eventually they were passed after many alterations were made and objections from some local residents overcome. Building commenced in July 1974 and was complete in March 1975. The re-dedication service was conducted by Mr, Gordon Higginson MSNU, President of the SNU on April 19th 1975.

The 20 foot extension cost £14,000 (including professional fees) and the Church now accommodates 200 people.

We would also like to pay tribute to Mrs Alice Winfield for her generous gifts of £500 in 1963 and a further £500 legacy in her Will when she passed to Spirit in 1975. Mrs Kathleen Wood who gave £2,000 in 1979, Mrs Sora Cashmore for her bequest of £1.850 in 1977, and to Mrs. Kyte for her untiring efforts to raise funds over a number of years.
