I BERTOLT BRECHT
New End Theatre, London NW3
Opened 14 March, 1991

The subtitle A Drama Documentary gives fair warning of the menu: a few poems, a few songs, a few scenes, a few extracts from his writings on theatre and a potted biog including a hilarious reconstruction of his running rings round the House Un-American Activities Committee. It's a little like staging Brecht For Beginners; you get a fair overall picture of the man's work, but the bittiness of the ingredients leaves no opportunity to demonstrate its impact or significance. The whole is necessarily less than the sum of its parts.
