A NIGHTMARE FOR C. DARWIN
Playhouse Studio, Edinburgh
August, 1992

The Shanghai Taro Butoh company returns to Edinburgh with a beautiful mime show. Brief sketches in the first half introduce us to basic images and situations – street scenes, playing in the park, animals and children imitating adults. Director Taro Shanghai stitches all these motifs together in a fluid, charming 30-minute suite. This is not the stylised Japanese performance of Kabuki or Noh; it is direct, accessible and brilliantly simple.
