A NIGHTMARE FOR C. DARWIN
Playhouse Studio, Edinburgh
August, 1992

The Shanghai Taro Butoh company returns to Edinburgh with a beautiful mime show. Brief sketches in the first half introduce us to basic images and situations street scenes, playing in the park, animals and children imitating adults. Director Taro Shanghai stitches all these motifs together in a fluid, charming 30-minute suite. This is not the stylised Japanese performance of Kabuki or Noh; it is direct, accessible and brilliantly simple.
