EASY
Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh
August, 1995

The heart sinks in the first minute. Rachel is trembling on a sofa while Paul straightens his clothing – it's a play about date-rape. But LookOut Theatre Company has come up with a four-hander that seemingly covers all the bases on this complex subject without succumbing to tub-thumping. There are no "all men are bastards" clichés, and instead of preaching, writer/director Nicola McCartney adds dollops of dark-grey humour into her account of the awkward, drunken party that leads up to the fateful act. Lucy McLellan as Rachel copes admirably with the breathtaking changes of pace that take her from howling victim to vampish pub-singer in an instant.
