In the 2002 Borough Elections, the Liberal Democrats made the best progress of any party with a +4.2% gain in share of the vote, gaining more than 9,000 votes more than 1998.
Lib Dem leader Harvey Rose commented "This suggests that our commitments to improve lighting and the environment in Ealing - and to open up council decision making - really connected with local voters, especially former Labour voters. It's also a poor result for the Tories - they don't appeal locally to people who are dissatisfied with Labour. Locally, we've been picking up members and supporters from both Labour and the Tories so we expected to do well, but these trends are extremely encouraging".
