Party Profile

South Thanet Liberal Democrats takes its name from the South Thanet Parliamentary Constituency which straddles the District Council areas of Thanet and Dover. In the larger Thanet area it comprises Ramsgate, Broadstairs and their hinterland, and in the Dover area it comprises Sandwich, together with a coastal strip running South to the borders of Deal and an inland stretch extending as far as Wingham along the South of the River Stour. There are two Branches, reflecting the two District portions of the constituency: Broadstairs, Ramsgate and St Peter's Branch, and Sandwich and District Branch. The remaining part of Thanet, ie from Birchington to Palm Bay, is in the North Thanet constituency, while the rest of Dover and Deal is in the Dover constituency.

Employment
By far the largest employer in the constituency is Pfizer, the American pharmaceuticals giant, which employs around 5000 people in their complex to the north of Sandwich. Ramsgate has a number of industrial estates and business parks, plus its marina and Royal Harbour, as well as London Manston Airport, the former RAF airfield, which is being re-developed under the title London Manston Airport. Broadstairs has its own tourist industry and much of the area's out-of-town shopping complexes are in Westwood.

History
Ramsgate and Broadstairs grew from relatively small fishing ports in the nineteenth century to become high-class holiday resorts - an industry now in terminal decline. Sandwich was, in medieval times, Britain's premier port but, due to the growth of shingle banks and the silting of the River Stour, is now a well-preserved medieval market town some two miles from the coast. Sandwich was a leading member of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports (precurser to the Royal Navy)
