DYNELEYs of Downham
Downham manor, Lancs, came into the DYNELEY family through the marriage of John DYNELEY (-1367) to Margaret the daughter and heir of Henry DE DOUNHAM, in 1308. [Lancs. Inq., Nicholas Assheton] Henry DE DOWNHAM had in 1302 been said to hold the third part of a knight's fee at Downham. [VCH Lancs.]
The manor of Downham was formally granted to John DYNELEY by the Duke of Lancaster in 1355. [Dep. Keep. Rep.] In 1357 John was pardoned by the King for acquiring Downham in tail from the Duke of Lancaster. [CPR]
John DYNELEY's father was Adam DE DYNELEY, see Lancs Dingleys.
At the inquisition held after John DYNELEY's death in 1367 it was found that he and his wife Isabella owned various lands in Yorkshire - see Yorks. Dingleys.
A dispute arose after John DYNELEY's grandson Henry died in 1384 seised of the manor of Downham. Henry had a baby daughter Margaret, so John PARKER of Folrigge took possession of Downham. John PARKER was presumably the son of Isabella DYNELEY, Henry's sister, who had married William PARKER of Folrigge. Henry's half-brother John DYNELEY, son of Richard and Alicia, disputed John PARKER's possession, claiming two-thirds of the manor of Downham and lands in Clitheroe, and Ley and Holroyds in Cliviger. John eventually gained possession, probably in the early 1400s. [VCH Lancs.]
The manor of Downham was sold in 1545 by Henry DYNELEY, a later descendant, to Ralph GREENACRES. Henry then claimed that he had been defrauded of the manor, but a court in 1550 found against him. [VCH Lancs.] Henry's son William DYNELEY lived in Leak, near Boston, Lincolnshire, see Lincs Dingleys.
The following shows those Dingleys who held Downham and their descendants. It is largely based on 'Loidis and Elmete' by T.D. Whitaker, but I have added certain dates from VCH Lancs. and elsewhere. See Yorks Dingleys for those branches which settled in Yorkshire, particularly in Bramhope.
