DINGLEYS in Hampshire (ex. IoW)

This page is under construction

I have found two groups of Dingleys in mainland Hampshire, who are almost certainly related:

Kingsclere Dingleys. These are the line of Dingleys which started with Robert DINGLEY/DYNELEY and his wife Margaret COMYN who bought the manor of Wolverton at Kingsclere in Hampshire some time around 1385. (I prefer to use the name Kingsclere instead of Wolverton to reduce confusion with Wolverton in the IoW.) They also acquired property in several other counties.

There has been some debate about whether Robert DINGLEY was from the Northamptonshire line. However, I believe there is reasonably strong circumstantial evidence that Robert came from Lancashire. There is also evidence that Robert was the brother of Richard DINGLEY who headed the Worcestershire line of Dingleys. There may of course also be a link with the Northants Dingleys, although I suspect that these were an unconnected family.

Margaret COMYN, Robert's wife, came from a branch of the Comyn family which had property in Worcs., Warks. and Ireland. Margaret's sister Ellen married James DINGLEY. I have not yet worked out the relationship between James and Robert, but it seems to be too much of a coincidence for them not to be closely related, and I expect they were brothers as well as brothers-in-law. James DINGLEY is covered under Surrey as he was of East Sheen, at least for a time.

The actual connection with the IoW Dingley branch is still, in my opinion, not known. But they share the same Dingley Arms, so a connection is almost certain.

Southampton Dingleys. These are the line of Dingleys who lived in Southampton in the 16th and 17th centuries. Descendants include Thomas DINGLEY who authored 'History From Marble'. I cannot yet tell which Dingley branch they are descended from, but it is likely to be the IoW or Kingsclere branch with whom they share the same Dingley arms.
